Last night, I attended a Climate Change forum at San Diego’s Balboa Park Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. It was great to hear the talk about what global warming is and why the environment is changing, but I think what had the most impact on me was the question and answer section at the end. Someone asked the moderators, “Well, what are you – as a climate change scientists – doing to change things in your personal lives?” Then came the all-important question: “What can WE do?”
I think this is the single most important question when it comes to the topic of climate change. This is the question that motivated us to create PineMark. People don’t realize that individual and household emissions make up about 40% of total greenhouse gases in the U.S. This is something the average person can control. Even if you don’t believe in global warming, wasteful consumption is expensive and pollution is simply disgusting.
There are easy things that an individual can do to make an impact, and these include:
1) Using all CFL lightbulbs
2) Unplugging all appliances that are not in use
3) Cutting the amount of time your car spends idling
4) Adjusting your household temperature settings two degrees in summer and winter
It’s all about action and awareness, because little things make a big difference.
I would like to end by saying Happy Blog Action Day! PineMark is proud to be part of a movement that inspires change and recognizes that one person can make a big difference.

I read about pinemark today in the S.D. Union Trib. Our family has made many easy, but effective changes that have been environmentally helpful. I would like to mention that we have been line-drying our clothes for a few years. A simple clothesline draped from tree to tree in our tranquil backyard has decreased our energy bill by 30-40%. This is pretty huge, but I don’t hear much about this simple strategy. It takes me 5 minutes to hang a load of wash and I’ve grown to enjoy the process and time spent in this way. Would you consider mentioning this energy saver on your site?
I am a horticulturist and garden designer with a 30 year ‘habit’ of planting trees. I have many, many ideas and strategies concerning the cooling effect of appropriate tree planting. Let me know if I can help………………….Keep up the good work. Lead by example. All the Best, Brenda Gousha
