350 Hangover

In the City of Angels where pollution and corruption is top notch, the International Day of Climate Action was an important time to let the city and the world know environmental action and policy to date is inadequate and unacceptable. The current level of 387 parts per million of CO2 in our atmosphere is unsafe for humanity. Despite the unsettling facts, cities up and down the California coast had some damn inspiring events this past Saturday, October 24th.

I attended two great events. The first was a Human Tide Line in Manhattan Beach to display how high the sea level would rise should predictions of many climate scientists come to fruition. Mayor Portia P Cohen and her city council were in attendance to show their support for climate action. I was pleasantly surprised to hear my town’s mayor state as of 2007 the city has committed to environmental policy inline with the Kyoto Protocol. Manhattan Beach green efforts here .

Here is a great slide show. See if you can spot PineMark Man.

The second event was a Blogger Beach Cleanup in Santa Monica organized by Green LA Girl. Over 40 LA bloggers and their friends got down and dirty to pick up trash south of the Santa Monica pier. It is incredible and absolutely disgusting the junk people leave. You don’t need SOCKS at the beach! More on the beach clean up here.

It is Monday and The International Day of Climate Action has passed. But do not let lethargy or withdrawal set in; there is no magic pill to save the earth. This is not about ONE day or ONE week or even ONE year. This is about our entire lives. If we continue to live the same way previous generations have, this planet will be unlivable. I challenge you to change your daily habits FOREVER. The alternative ain’t so pretty.
